Ever wonder where the name "Hoagie" came from? It originated from an area called "Hog Island" in Philadelphia, which was home to a shipyard during WWI. Many Italian immigrants working at the shipyard would bring big sandwiches made with cold-cut meats, spices, lettuces, tomatoes, peppers and more as their lunches, which led to the nickname of "hoggies."
