Among the first to attempt recording voices of the dead was American photographer Attila von Szalay. He conducted a number of sessions using a microphone in an insulated cabinet. Many sounds were found on the tape that were not heard on the speaker at the time of recording. He believed these sounds to be the voices of discarnate spirits.
