Many years before European settlers arrived, the Cherokee natives lived and hunted in what is now Greenville. Richard Pearis, one of the earliest settlers in the area, purchased 10 square miles along the Reedy River from three Cherokee chiefs in 1773. He later operated a grist mill at the Upper Falls of the Reedy.
